Our natural body is a large conglomeration of cells and organisms that interact with each other and live in harmony. If the liver is overburdened with toxins it is not able to produce cholesterol. Cholesterol, produced by the liver, is used by the cell's energy factories to create a hormone called pregnenolone. Pregnenolone is made primarily in the adrenal glands, but is also produced in the liver and brain. Pregnenolone is an important hormone because it is the building block for DHEA, progesterone, and the adrenal stress hormones. DHEA, as we saw earlier, is an important anti-stress hormone and a precursor to all of the sex hormones.
The production of DHEA is particularly important for post-menopausal women as the adrenal gland production of DHEA helps to make up for the loss of estrogen and progesterone from the ovaries. Sufficient amounts of DHEA can alleviate the symptoms of menopause and help maintain healthful levels of estrogen and progesterone.
