Stress
Stress and how we deal with stressful situations is directly related to cellular degeneration. The "flight or fight" response to a dangerous situation is stressful. However, we can also provoke a "flight or fight" response or "stress response" when experiencing a simple annoyance such as being cut-off in traffic. Chronic stress can arise from everyday living experiences such as dealing with demanding bosses, hurried schedules with children, relationship problems, etc., etc. During stress the adrenal hormones, adrenaline and cortisol, re-direct resources from various cells throughout the body to provide maximum energy for survival responses to life-threatening situations. This same response happens even when the situation is not life-threatening, but we allow it to make us feel angry, overwhelmed or out of control. It is a primitive and instinctual survival response. When stress occurs, the hormone adrenaline signals the liver and tissue to release stores of glucose (sugar) to be used for the energy needed to run away or to fight. Adrenaline also directs blood supply toward the heart and lungs in order to improve oxygen and blood supply to muscles. Blood and energy are conversely moved away from digestion processes to save on energy (Nature does not expect you to stop for lunch while you are running away from a life-threatening situation). The hormone cortisol kicks in and stops the pancreas from secreting insulin in order to maximize glucose availability in the bloodstream. This is one reason chronic stress can contribute to diabetes.
