Building muscle happens when we use our existing muscles to such an extent that the body calls up reinforcements. Our unused or latent muscles cells, called embryonic or myogenic stem cells, become activated with physical exertion (especially resistance training). These baby muscle cells fuse into new muscle fiber as long as we provide them with the nutrients they need to grow and thrive.
