Serotonin is a neurotransmitter of major importance in brain chemistry. It is responsible for regulation of appetite, sleep control and when deficiencies occur, some emotional tendencies such as aggression and obsessive-compulsive disorders. Serotonin is metabolized from the essential amino acid tryptophan, which can be derived from indole through pancreatic degradation in the small intestine. Additionally, its presence is noted in a wide array of food sources such as pineapple, banana, kiwi fruit, plum, tomato, walnuts and others.
