Menopause is a time in a woman's life when her periods (menstruation) eventually stop and the body goes through changes that no longer allow her to get pregnant. It is a natural event that normally occurs in women age 45 - 55. During menopause, a woman's ovaries stop releasing eggs and they produce less estrogen and progesterone. Changes in these hormones cause menopause symptoms. Periods occur less often and eventually stop. Sometimes this happens suddenly. But most of the time, periods slowly stop over time.
Toxins in our body can also have an affect on estrogen and progesterone levels, even before the onset of menopause. When the sponge-like connective tissue becomes overburdened with toxins it is like a dish-sponge that has become so old that it no longer holds water. When this happens the buffering effect of the matrix is compromised and the liver struggles to keep up. When the liver becomes overburdened with toxins, these toxins begin to spread to other tissues of the body, including the endocrine glands. This affects our hormone regulation and can produce PMS symptoms and exacerbate menopause symptoms.
Estrogen levels are largely controlled by the liver. The body produces three types of estrogen compounds. Estrone (E1) and estradiol (E2) are considered the aggressive types of estrogen because they stimulate cell growth.
At high levels they are thought to be associated with increased risk of breast and uterine cancer. Estriol (E3) is the third type of estrogen and is more benign. Estriol contributes to healthy and youthful skin, and may have an anticancer role. It exerts a protective and counterbalancing effect against estrone and estradiol. The liver is responsible for breaking down excess estrogen through a couple of the Phase II detoxification pathways known as methylation and sulfation. When the liver is overburdened this pathway no longer completely breaks down excess estrogen and estrone and estradiol levels can become elevated.
