Angelica: Is a traditional bitter for stomach upsets, colic, cramps, gas and lung problems. Angelica is a good choice for menstrual disorders and menopausal discomforts. Used to improve circulation and add warmth to the body. Anti-inflammatory for sore/swollen joints and as a diaphoretic to promote sweating during fevers and colds.

Caution: Avoid large amounts of Angelica during pregnancy.

Astragalus: Astragalus membranaceus (Huang qi) Chinese herbalists have used Astragalus for centuries, calling it "Huang qi" meaning "strenghthener/nourisher of the qi" (chi/vital energy) and have used it as a recovery tonic for debilitating illness, fatigue, stress and lowered immunity.

Antiviral, anti-inflammatory, helps lower blood pressure and assists in blood cleansing. Excellent for chronic non-healing sores. Strengthens digestion and renews depleted Adrenal Glands.

Suggested use: Externally, apply full strength or diluted 1 to 10 with water. Internally, take 5-15 drops on tongue or in liquid.

Cascara: (Cascara sagrada) This North American shrub is a well known laxative and colon cleanser that has been widely used by physicians as well as native peoples. Catnip: (Nepeta cataria) An excellent herb for children and babies with colic. Helps relieve upset stomach, gas, and vomiting. A mild sedative and antispasmodic that helps calm the nerves and promote restful sleep.

Cayenne: (Capsicum annuum) A heating, blood moving herb that dilates blood vessels and capillaries increasing circulation to extremities, skin and lungs. A valuable first-aid treatment for occluded blood flow due to injury. Anti-inflammatory helps to reduce pain when applied externally. Used for aches, stiff joints, etc. Stimulates and digestion-for those who need more "fire" to breakdown their food.

Caution: Some individuals are sensitive to this very spicy plant and should use in moderation.

Cedar: (Thuja spp) A deeply aromatic Native American tree honored as The Tree of Life and prayer plant by some tribes. Cedar has the ability to clear negative influences and restore balance. Traditionally used to treat a range of uterine and cervical imbalances. It is an herb used to bring on delayed menstruation. Cedar is a good choice for fungal infections. We harvest fresh Cedar with offerings and permission.

Chamomile Glycerite: German - (Matricaria Recutita) The strongly scented organic chamomile flowers are extracted in pure vegetable glycerin and contain no alcohol. Another gentle and effective herb for fussy babies and children as well as adults. Traditionally used as a digestive stimulant for nausea, gas, and general tummy troubles. Helpful for mild insomnia and anxiety. German Chamomile has antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory, sedative and antimicrobial properties.

Cinnamon: (Cinnamomum cassia) This well loved aromatic warming spice is also known as an antiseptic that also promotes peripheral circulation. It is used as a stimulant and to relive gas and nausea. Helpful for chronic diarrhea. Good in winter time teas.

Cleavers: (Galium aparine) Used to cool the body during high fevers. A cleansing and detoxifying herb that helps with alkalinizing the system. Cleavers is often used as a diuretic for water imbalances such as edema and to help lower blood pressure. It also addresses the possible underlying kidney / bladder issues. A well respected lymphatic mover and cleanser, assisting in swollen glands and blood purification. Often chosen as part of herbal Cancer protocols. Cleavers twines itself throughout our herb gardens weaving the medicine plants together and offering itself as medicine. We harvest it fresh and extract it immediately in organic grain alcohol and distilled water.

Cloves: (Syzygium aromaticum) The medicinal use of Clove dates back to the Han Dynasty in China around 200 B.C. It has been a highly prized treatment for both topical and internal fungal imbalances, parasite infections and certain bacteria. It has been beneficial to respiratory and digestive troubles, diarrhea, and toothache.

Cornsilk: (Zea mays) There are many legends about The Corn Maiden. . . Cornsilk is known as a gentle, soothing, non-irritating diuretic. Used for chronic urinary problems including water retention and as an important aid in the passing of stones.

Cramp Bark: This plant is one of the best uterine relaxants and is a favorite for menstrual cramps and excessive bleeding during menopause and menstruation. Useful for threatened miscarriage due to stress or uterine tension. Helpful during morning sickness.

Echinacea Alcohol-Free: This sweet tasting, sugar-free tincture assists the body's defense system in fighting infection. Extracted in vegetable glycerin to use with children, animals, alcohol-sensitive adults, and infections aggravated by sugars found in alcohol. A favorite herb for elders, athletes, and to improve sexual function/potency. A specific for those with a weakened immune system. Said to soften withdrawal symptoms associated with substance addiction as well as the side effects of chemotherapy and radiation treatments.

Caution: Though not as stimulating to the system as true Panax Ginsengs, it has the potential to aggravate insomnia. Those with arrhythmia, asthma, or high blood pressure should use caution and consult with a Health Care Practitioner prior to use. Avoid during pregnancy. Not a good choice for children.

Fennel: (Foeniculum vulgare) A safe tasty herbal friend for babies and childrens general "tummy troubles" as well as adults. Stimulates digestion and helps relieve cramps and gas while acting as an antacid. Fennel is traditionally used to increase milk flow in nursing mothers. Also used as an appetite stimulator, an anti-bacterial, and to reduce bad breath or body odor. A favorite herb of the respected German herbalist/intuitive/healer, Hildegard of Bingen.

Feverfew: The leaves are respected for their beneficial effects on migraine headaches through vasodilatation. May also benefit dizziness and ringing in the ears, menstrual cramps, and inflamed joints. Also a digestive bitter.

Suggested use: At first sign of a migraine attack, take 30 drops every 1/2 hour. For prevention, 30 drops daily. Other symptoms 20 drops 3 times daily.

Figwort: (Scrophularia nodosa) Is a well respected lymphatic cleanser and mover that was found to be effective during Tuberculosis out breaks. Also called the Scrophula Plant, it is used for all types of skin eruptions, abscesses, swellings and wounds. An important ingredient in several historical and present day cancer formulas. It was known in the early 1900's as Dr. Eli Jones "Compound Scrophularia". Figwort has lovely and unusual flowers that the bees love and is a delight to come across in the wild.

Galangal: (Alpina galangal) This pungent member of the Ginger family is warming and stimulating to the digestion. Often used in Oriental cooking. Like Ginger, it is used for Sea and Motion sickness. Often found in historical cancer formulas and salves. Hildegard of Bingen thought highly of Galangal as medicine for the heart and in Germany, it is still used for this purpose. Recent studies have shown it to have antiviral properties.

Ginger: This tasty familiar herb has a long history of use. It is specific for nausea, motion sickness, and morning sickness during pregnancy. It is a warming herb, good for circulatory disorders and helpful during colds and flu. It has strong anti-inflammatory properties. Chemotherapy patients have found it helps associated nausea.

Ginkgo: This ancient tree has provided medicinal help for millennia. Gotu Kola: Has long been utilized to enhance mental clarity, calmness, and memory. Known to pull heavy metals from the soil and water as well as our bodies. A respected anti-inflammatory for painful swollen joints and prostate problems.

Jackass Bitters: (Nuerolena lobata) This plant is recognized for its ability to expel parasites and to treat blood sugar imbalances.

Licorice: Its effectiveness has been validated by many scientific studies. It has been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects similar to cortisone. A favorite for toning the adrenal glands and treating the liver. It soothes and coats inflamed mucus membranes, benefiting conditions like colic and stomach ulcers. Bronchial distress and coughs may also be helped by Licorice's ability to liquefy and expel mucus. It may be used as a gentle laxative and for hormone regulation.

Passionflower: (Passiflora incarnata) A most helpful herb for nerves, insomnia and sleep disorders. Helps calm an overactive mind. Used for menopausal anxiety and nervousness. May help decrease outbreaks of herpes and shingles. Passionflower has been known to benefit children with frequent asthma attacks.

Pau d'Arco: (Tabebuia impetiginosa) The dried inner bark of this South American Tree is known for its ability to treat external fungal/yeast infections of feet, mouth, skin and vagina. Internally, and in combination with diet changes, it can be most beneficial for systemic fungal infections such as Candida.

According to the book: Herbal Medicine, Healing and Cancer by Donald Yance, "Lapacho, also referred to as Pau d'arco, contains anti-cancer compounds, the main one being lapachol, which suppresses tumor formation and reduces tumor viability...Lapacho is a mild analgesic for cancer patients and is completely safe as a whole herb." Antioxidant, antibacterial and antiparasitic.

Peppermint: (Mentha Piperita) An age old remedy for digestive tract disorders such as upset stomach, flatulence, nausea, vomiting, and uncomfortable fermentation. Stimulates bile production and useful for gallbladder trouble. Eases griping caused by the use of laxatives. Very tasty and breath freshening.

Propolis: (Apis melliluca) The dried glue like resin made by bees and used as a building material as well as being antiseptic to the hive. Propolis has been used as an infection fighter, especially for the mouth, gums, intestines, and wounds.

Caution: It may be wise to avoid bee products if allergic to bee stings.

Quassia: (Quassia amara) The wood of this tree has a long history of use for parasites and as a bitter stomach tonic.

Red Clover: (Trifolium pratense) A mineral rich blood cleanser that has withstood the test of time. It acts to increase the body's ability to remove waste products which helps in the assimilation of nutrients. Excellent during and after debilitating diseases and for chronic skin problems. Red Clover helps to increase milk flow in nursing mothers.

Caution: Red Clover is reputed to have estrogenic properties, not for use during pregnancy.

Red Root: Is an excellent lymphatic system cleanser. Assists the immune system during and after infection by carrying away waste products. Stimulates fluid drainage from congested tissue, i.e. swollen glands, hydroseals, and "fluidy" type cysts.

Saw Palmetto: The berries have traditionally been used by Native Americans to strengthen and tone the male reproductive system. A specific for enlarged prostate glands. A urinary antiseptic and anti-inflammatory. Safely helps to boost male sex hormones, may inhibit male pattern baldness. May take up to 6 weeks to feel full effects. Can be taken for an unlimited period of time.

Schizandra Berries: (Schizandra chinensis - Wu wei zi) Is also known as "Five Flavor Fruit" - used for centuries in the orient as a general tonic that increases one's resistance. Sheep Sorrel: (Rumex acetosa) This tiny member of the Dock family is a cooling diuretic often used for kidney and liver problems and to cool a "hot stomach".

Skullcap: (Scutellaria laterifolia) Is respected as one of the finest nervines, a fantastic tonic to the nervous system. Calming and sedative, it promotes restful sleep and is antispasmodic. Excellent for drug and alcohol withdrawal symptoms.

Slippery Elm Bark: (Ulmus fulva) This native American tree bark has long been used for its mucilagenic properties by indigenous people and herbalists. It is nutritive, soothing and softening to tissues. Used by opera singers and speakers for mouth and throat inflammation. Absorbs toxins and soothes the whole digestive tract. Slippery Elm is an amphoteric herb, normalizing opposite conditions i.e. constipation and diarrhea.

Our wildlife rehabilitation center mixes this (as a powder) with all our orphaned mammal formulas. May mediate certain drug therapies that cause acidity but will also slow their intake.

Caution: May slow down the absorption of drugs. If this is detrimental, take between drug doses.

St. John's Wort: This herb is known for its antidepressant, anti-viral, and anti-inflammatory effects. It has been used as an alternative for some antidepressant drug therapies, is a catalyst for the immune system, and can aid in decreasing pain and swelling in joints and muscles.

Recent research has shown that St. John's Wort causes the liver to produce an enzyme that breaks down drugs. This can be both beneficial and detrimental (see caution below) depending on the situation. It can be used beneficially AFTER DRUG THERAPY to help the body detoxify.

Suggested use: 30 drops 3 times daily. As an antidepressant use for 6 months or more. Effects may take up to a month to manifest.

Stinging Nettle: (Urtica dioica) One of Nature's finest and most nutritive green mineral supplements that our bodies know just what to do with. Young nettles are an excellent food plant (cooked) and a traditional spring tonic. It assists in alkalinizing an acidic system. Stinging Nettle tones mucus membranes, antihistamine and astringent, a specific for hay fever and other allergic reactions. As a blood cleanser, it benefits most chronic skin problems, swollen joints, and uric acid build up.

Sweet Annie: (Artemesia annua) Historically used for the treatment of malaria, other blood parasites, and digestive parasites. Also helps to balance intestinal flora. Sweet Annie is currently being made into a chemotherapeutic agent. For more information on the use of this plant, refer to the study published by two research professors at the University of Washington, Henry Lai and Narenda Singh in the Journal of Life Sciences 2001 and the British Naturopathic Journal 2002. Excellent preventative herb to take along when traveling in foreign countries.

Turmeric: (Curcuma longa) The Aruvedic and Chinese traditional healing systems have long utilized Turmeric as a powerful anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, a liver stimulant and a digestive aid. It has also been used to stretch tight ligaments.

Modern researchers have substantiated these uses. They have found it to be an excellent adjunct to many cancer therapies, an anti-oxidant that helps protect the liver from toxic build up, a natural cholesterol lowering herb, and a spice that helps to digest protein. Unlike other anti-bacterial agents in use, Turmeric strengthens digestion while helping to improve intestinal flora. Curcumin, the yellow pigment found in Turmeric root, is currently being used in human clinical trials for the treatment of HIV infection.

Caution: As a member of the ginger family, Turmeric has warming qualities. While excellent for people whom "run cold", it may be best to avoid when experiencing hot flashes or night sweats. Do not use during pregnancy.

Usnea: (Usnea barbata) At least four centuries of use of this lichen as medicine is now validated by scientific studies. Usnea has been shown to be effective against many serious gram-positive bacteria as well as fungal infections. It is known for its immunostimulant properties. Indigenous people and wilderness travelers have effectively applied Usnea directly to wounds to stop bleeding and prevent infection. Commonly known as "Old Mans Beard".

Caution: Please be certain about how to identify the Usnea species of lichen before attempting to harvest your own!

Valerian: Use to calm nerves and help relieve insomnia, cramps, headaches, anxiety, muscle tension, and pain. Action is relaxant and antispasmodic.

Suggested use: 5-25 drops on tongue or in liquid as needed.
Contains: Fresh organic Valerian root extracted in Korbel Brandy for a minimum of 3 months.
Caution: May have opposite or stimulating effects on some individuals; discontinue use if this occurs.

Vitex: A tonic for the reproductive system, Vitex (or Chaste Berry) has a hormone balancing effect. Useful for PMS, menopausal changes, breast and ovarian cysts, and other disorders related to hormone function. Stimulates milk production in nursing mothers.

Suggested use: 20-30 drops 3 times daily.

Wild Yam: Has been highly regarded by many cultures for its use in normalizing hormone production. Eases crampy menstruation and menopausal symptoms. For maximum effectiveness, allow Wild Yam to be absorbed by the mucus membranes in the mouth rather than swallowing.

He was quoted as saying "Betony preserveth the lives and bodies of men from the dangers of epidemical diseases..." (One must assume he means women as well). Yarrow: (Achillea millefolium) An aromatic digestive bitter that stimulates appetite and improves digestion. Yarrow helps bring on a good sweat and lowers fevers when taken as a tea or when the extract is put into hot water. It is an excellent hemostat that stops bleeding of wounds as well as reduces excessive menstrual flow.

Also an anti-inflammatory, which helps reduce muscle pain and joint swelling as well as tones the uterus. Yarrow has a history of use on varicose veins and hemorrhoids. This is an abundant plant on our land and around the globe.

Caution: Contains small amounts of thujone-those allergic to this chemical should not use Yarrow internally or externally. Discontinue use if a skin reaction occurs. Not for extended use during pregnancy.

Yellow Dock: A nutritive tonic traditionally used for anemia, chronic skin problems, and to stimulate liver and digestive function. An excellent blood builder during pregnancy. For this use, add drops to hot water or tea, let sit five minutes, then drink.
