GERD, or gastroesophageal reflux disease, is heartburn that occurs more than twice a week or interferes with a patient's lifestyle. GERD occurs when the sphincter that holds stomach contents in the stomach weakens or relaxes at the wrong time, and stomach acid (or sometimes bile) flows back (refluxes) into the esophagus. This acid irritates the lining of esophagus and causes the following symptoms:
- Burning sensation in chest (heartburn), may spread to throat, possible sour taste in mouth
- Chest pain
- Difficulty swallowing
- Dry cough, hoarseness, or sore throat
- Regurgitation of food or sour liquid ("acid reflux")
- Feeling of lump in throat ("something won't go down")
