A persistent fever accompanied by chills, fatigue, headache and general poor health may be indications of Cytomegalovirus (CMV). CMV is a common virus infecting people worldwide and is transmitted person to person via close contact.
CMV is found in body fluids and is spread through sexual contact, blood transfusions, organ transplants and even breastfeeding. Hand to mouth contact within households and daycare centers or during playground contact can transmit CMV.
Almost all people have been exposed to CMV by the time they reach adulthood and means that most everyone is a carrier. While a healthy immune system tends to hold CMV in check, a weakened immune system can allow the activation of CMV and cause serious disease. This can occur anytime in life, but most people never develop symptoms. Where symptoms do occur, they are usually manifest in three to twelve weeks following exposure.
